Proud to be Bordeaux Cabernet Franc

There are only a handful of 100% varietal Bordeaux Cabernet Franc producers. And Paradise Rescued is proud to be one of them. And despite our very strategic Vision focussed approach to our wine business, becoming a leading promoter for the amazing wine varietal Cabernet Franc wasn’t in that picture.

Where it all began – Hourcat Sud Cabernet Franc block

In fact, until almost the last minute, we thought that our first vineyard block was a Merlot block! As I tell the story in Chapter 2 of my new book “It’s Not About the Dirt”, despite the last minute advice, we didn’t really have an option. If we wanted to help sustain our village and maintain the heritage around our own corner of that village, there was no other choice but to go forward. And then use the unique qualities of Cabernet Franc as a full varietal wine to create a very different single block wine product in the Bordeaux market.

Of course today there is no doubt. The unmistakeable and beautiful taste that is Cabernet Franc is clear for all to taste in our B1ockOne and Cloud9 wines. The combination of Bordeaux climate and soil combined with loving hands on organic viticulture has delivered an amazing taste from inside one of the world’s leading wine producing regions.

Cabernet Franc is the subtle force in Bordeaux assemblage wines. Often overlooked in favour of its two genetic children Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Cabernet Franc adds class, perfume and easier drinking. It is often the smaller part of a Bordeaux wine composition but when tasted as a 100% varietal, it is easy to see why it’s influence and blending into a more full-bodied wine provides such a difference.

Paradise Rescued flagship wine - B1ockOne 100% varietal Bordeaux Cabernet Franc.

Our flagship wine B1ockOne Bordeaux Cabernet Franc

In a world that currently favours (but now slowly starting to change) big full-bodied wines, Cabernet Franc is a moderator and enhancer, toning down the heaviness and tannic approach of big Bordeaux wines. With a taste that is closer to the expressive charms and delicate taste of Pinot Noir than Cabernet Sauvignon, it is easy to see why its influence is starting to grow back.

With a Bordeaux Cabernet Franc, gone are the often acidic and green tastes found in similar wines from climates where achieving full ripeness is an annual or seasonal challenge. In comes a wine that is very expressive with a young cassis flavour moderating to ripe soft cherry with age. Aided by oak maturation, there is no lack of subtle complexity, all topped off by the Cabernet Franc signature finish. Its spicy seemingly endless length makes it a perfect food and ‘drink on its own’ wine.

It wasn’t quite where we wanted to be. Nor how we wished to get started. But happily we took advantage of the cards handed to us in order to create something so rare and different in the vast wine vat that is Bordeaux.
