It all begins with a clear mental picture – a vision – of what you want.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right” wrote Henry Ford.   If he had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses…but his vision was different. He could have chosen to listen to their mindset and views. But his dream was stronger….and as they say, the rest is history!

I think it is important to distinguish between the optimism / pessimism model and what I will call here the mental models or mindset. This blog is not about thinking that something will or will not happen because it gives us a pleasant feeling. It’s about developing a clear mental vision of what is possible, changing our belief patterns and taking action to start to make it happen. There is a world of difference between the two models.

How often do we hear people talking about things going to turn out alright? Usually there is no plan and strategy behind such a thought, just a vague hope that everything will be OK because that will be much more pleasant (ie less pain) to that individual than the opposite outcome.

Bob Lodie in smallbusinessbrief.com discussing an article from the Wall Street Journal talks about the significance of our beliefs and the mental models, or mindsets that shape our behaviour. We act and perform in accordance with the beliefs that these models tell us is true… So if we think something is not possible, we don’t commit much energy and resource to achieving that goal. Old habits die slowly because they are supported by an outdated mindset.

If you want to change your mental mindset model here is a simple 4 step process you can use:-

  1. Begin by specifically identifying the results you want. Stephen Covey would have called this “Begin with the end in mind.” I call it “Get a clear mental picture or vision
  2. Develop a strategy and step by step plan to achieve these results. Write it down!
  3. Look at your beliefs about those actions to see if they are holding you back… Create a mindset made of beliefs that support what you want in your future.
  4. Get started – NOW!!! Take action…otherwise steps 1 – 3 were wasted!
