“Our attitude is our most precious asset. Guard it with your life!” David Stannard from “Paradise Rescued – From Cabbage Patch to Cabernet Franc”. I might almost go so far as to say that attitude is everything! Sometimes good; sometimes bad.

“I arrived back in Cardan in early January 2011. The weather was cold and my heart wasn’t fully there as my Dad was ill. The winery was at the optimum temperature, thanks to the split aircon system. Our eight barrels looked beautiful, all lined up with their red fat bellies! That first tasting time was something special. I had no idea what to expect. But I had learnt – through lots of good and bad experience – what tasted nice and what was unsuitable. Our Cabernet Franc tasted magnificent, barrel after barrel. All very similar. Just minor barrel to barrel differences, with a certain uniqueness of fruit purity and youth.

Young Bordeaux Cabernet Franc tends to be all cassis in taste, which goes on to mature into cherry roundness. The nose was beautiful, the body starting to gain complexity with the oak maturation and the length was extraordinary. All the kind of qualities one seeks in a great Cabernet Franc.

“Paradise Rescued – From Cabbage Patch to Cabernet Franc” the book by David Stannard. A great read at any time of day!

Somehow we had created a miracle. Somehow our attitude had kept a team together and delivered an unthinkable result. We had learnt together a couple of very simple lessons. That our attitude, our mutually supportive and encouraging behaviour of going back out one more time to find a solution when nothing seemed possible, had become our most precious asset. We now guard it with our lives! And secondly that out of difficulty – even very deep difficulty – one can find big opportunities.

From a former cabbage patch we had created a magnificent, almost unique Bordeaux Cabernet Franc.”
